Damson Cloud: The Origin

Damson Cloud: The Origin

In this week’s video, our CEO and Founder Fintan Murphy will be talking about the origin of Damson Cloud, a business and Google Partner based in Ireland which focuses on the UK and Irish markets.

If you’re interested in learning about the history of Damson Cloud and what we do, stay tuned!

Where Did The Name ‘Damson Cloud’ Originate From?

The idea which sparked creation of the name Damson Cloud goes back to our Founder Fintan’s childhood and a treehouse he had which was propped up on the branches of a damson tree.

From his parents kitchen, Fintan recalls a conversation with his brother and business partner Donal where they were brainstorming together to come up with a name for their company.

After googling several names and realising they’d been taken or simply didn’t work for the business, the idea of Damson came to mind as they sat close to the treehouse they used to play in as children.

From Damson Technologies To Damson Cloud

As Damson Cloud started out as a technology and IT support business for almost ten years, the name was originally Damson Technologies to reflect the services offered by the company. Following this, Damson began the transition into selling space on the Cloud and Google became the primary focus of the business.

At this point, Damson Technologies made the decision to rebrand the company to become Damson Cloud, which still maintained the origin name and nod to the treehouse while reinforcing what the focal point of the business now was.

The Beginning of Damson Cloud

Damson Cloud is a family business and while our CEO Fintan worked alone for the first year of the company’s life, Donal, his brother and business partner, who had previously been an IT Manager in a publishing company then came on board despite the potential risks entrepreneurship can have. With Donal’s I.T background and Fintan’s sales skills, the partnership worked extremely well.

Damson Cloud Headquarters started out from Fintan’s bedroom where the business was run during the start-up period and eventually, as Damson Cloud began to grow, so too did the team and the business got an office space to accommodate this. With more family members joining the Damson Cloud team over the years, this has allowed the company to take on the personal values of the family at the heart of its formation.

The business started out as a side project for Fintan when he was just 19 years old and still in school, with a focus on IT maintenance for his Mother’s school. The idea then was to focus on working in the education sector, and while this market did not have a lot of money behind it, it enabled the start up of what is now established as Damson Cloud.
