Google Extends its Auto-Provisioning Support

The enterprise IT environment is not getting any simpler. Even with the rapid shift towards cloud computing platforms and services, there are increasingly complex solutions to choose from. Many of today’s companies need to work with multiple cloud-based applications to take care of everything from project management to customer relationship management to VoIP communications. At the same time, employees are finding themselves under greater pressure to remember a multitude of different login details for different services. However, not only does handling multiple online identities get confusing; it also means more potential attack vectors for hackers and malicious software to exploit.

User provisioning has become essential for organisations to manage multiple user identities, provide unified login-in details and manage identities from a centralised platform. Automated provisioning takes this concept a step further by providing the ability to deploy services using a set of predefined procedures that may be applied without human intervention. Nonetheless, while this can, in theory at least, save administrators a great deal of time and confusion, it does rely extensively on different vendors being prepared to work closely together to make sure that their services are properly integrated. Google first added the ability for G Suite administrators to automatically provision users on third-party apps back in March.

G Suite has become one of the world’s largest cloud computing platforms for everything from workplace productivity applications to online storage. Nonetheless, most G Suite users also rely on various other apps, and Google seeks to provide native support for as many of these popular third-party apps as possible. The recent update, launched back in June, provides native auto-provisioning support for Asana, FreshDesk, Dialpad, RingCentral, LucidChart and Smartsheet, bringing the total number of apps supported to 11. Thanks to the new changes, any G Suite administrator whose teams also rely on any of the above software can now have user account details automatically synchronised with the third-party apps.

How G Suite Auto-Provisioning Simplifies Onboarding

As we’ve already discussed, manually setting up multiple accounts for different platforms is hardly an efficient approach, especially when you’re recruiting new employees. Integrating a new employee into your company can be time-consuming enough as it is, but thanks to the ability to set up one user account and a unified sign-in for a wider range of business apps, the process is now much simpler.

For example, with the recently added support for RingCentral, users of the popular unified communications platform will be able to automatically assign new phone numbers to new team members. New users will also be able to see all their colleagues as new contacts right away.

The whole idea of using a major service like Google as a single sign-on authority is nothing new, and the trend towards easier auto-provisioning is undoubtedly here to stay. The recent changes were made available through both rapid and scheduled release and apply to G Suite Basic, Government, Nonprofit, Education, Business and Enterprise.
